From 4 August to 17 September 2016, Anda Lāce's solo exhibition me Me ME will be held in the Main Gallery of the Mūkusala Art Salon. The exhibition is part of the three-event cycle Explosion of the Inner Me, Variants of Gathering and Neutralising the Consequences, whose main motif is the individual's encounter with the undesirable and her or his ability to deal with the inner conflict caused by a negative experience.
An encounter with the bad, undesirable or difficult heightens the understanding of one's "me", with the individual's inner world at times starting to dominate the external world. Typically, most diverse means are used to escape from the distressing tension and to restore inner balance. Even if, with time, a solution is found, the question of responsibility towards those involved remains relevant. Does a bad experience concern only the individual and can it be passed on to others? When does the saviour become a victim and the victim turn into an aggressor? Which solution to choose and is any of the possible scenarios actually the best?
Anda Lāce's latest solo exhibition me Me ME deals with existential conflict and plays out possible solutions. Her familiar monochrome colour palette is on this occasion extended with red accents, the paintings dissolve into space in the form of an installation, acquiring the form of a purifying and restoring ritual with the help of two performances with participation of musicians. Similar to her previous work, Lāce's exhibition, or a cycle of three events, blends private impressions, emotional experiences, mythological and religious images, creating a visual, sonic and choreographic account of the processes inside a human being.
"me Me ME is an explosion of the inner 'Me' in slow-motion, where different cases of concealing, transforming or influencing the 'Me' take place on each successive step." (Anda Lāce)
The cycle started on 10 June with the performance Decontamination next to the newly renovated building of the Latvian National Museum of Art. Its video documentation and a new, related series of paintings in the form of a spatial installation will be presented in the second part of Explosion of the Inner Me, Variants of Gathering and Neutralising the Consequences – the solo exhibition me Me ME in the Main Gallery of the Mūkusala Art Salon. The cycle will conclude on 10 September – during the White Night – with the performance Variants, which is developed together with composers Evija Skuķe and Platons Buravickis and an ensemble of speaker–singers. For the cycle's opening performance Decontamination Anda has been nominated for the prestigious Purvītis Prize.
Anda Lāce's (1982) exhibition and performance projects are a multi-layered blend of painterly stasis and audio-visual choreography developing in space-time. Abstracted images and expressive brushstroke gestures dominate her monochrome painting. They often suggest that painting is a choreographic process, where the canvas, brush and paint, as well as movement of the artist's body in space and along the picture plane play a part.
